The statistics were calculated from twice daily gridded synoptic analyses produced by the U.S. National Meteorological Center (NMC) on an operational basis for 11 winters (1965-66 to 1975-76) and 12 summers (1966 to 1977). Time-filtered transient eddy and mean standing eddy variances and covariances are included together with the time-mean fields. Statistics for individual years supplement the 12 summer and 11 winter average statistics. A more extensive collection of associated grid point values is available on magnetic tape.
