The NCAR Local Network
This document is in two sections. The first is intended for the general user of the NCAR Local Network. It describes in "cookbook" fashion the operation of the Network. A multitude of examples is included to aid the user in learning how to make use of the Network with a minimum of effort. The second section describes in detail the IBM 4341 Network Interface ccrnands. In order to avoid unnecessary duplication of material, portions of this manual assume that the reader is familiar with one or more of the following documents, according to his/her applications: 1. An Overview of NCAR's Computing Environment (NCAR/TN-177+IA) 2. An Introduction to the SCD Graphics System (NCAR/TN-161+IA) 3. The System Plot Package (NCAR-TN/162+IA) 4. The SCD Graphics Utilities (NCAR-TN/166+IA) 5. THE CRAY-1 COMPUTERS: A Guide to Supercomputing at NCAR, (NCAR/TN- 226+IA) 6. CRAY-OS Version 1.0 Reference Manual (SR-0011) 7. The IBM 4341 Tutorials 8. The IBM 4341: Gateway to NCAR Computers (NCAR/TN-196+IA) The first chapter provides an overview of the NCAR Local Network. Separate chapters are included describing the interaction of each user accessible machine on the Network. Each of these chapters will describe the method of sending a file from a particular machine to any other on the Network and to get the results back or sent on to another machine on the Network. The separate document, THE CRAY-1 COMPUTERS: A Guide to Supercomputing at NCAR, describes FORTRAN-callable versions of the Network job control statements described in Chapter 3 of this manual. In this document, "files" may refer to data, programs or messages. The term "ACQUIRE" refers to a request to receive a file from a remote machine. The term "DISPOSE" refers to a request to send a file to a remote machine.
