This document was previously submitted as two separate manuscripts to the Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences. A reviewer suggested that the two manuscripts were too detailed and that a condensed single manuscript might be more appropriate for the Journal, with a more detailed description of the study published as an NCAR Technical Note. We concur with this suggestion and hope that this Technical Note which combines the two manuscripts into one detailed exposition will be useful for those interested in the topic.
