ICARUS Chamber Experiment: Hildebrandt Ruiz Lab_20180115_octane / nitric oxide / nitrite_Chlorine radical_Ammonium sulfate_medRH

Goals:
Find SOA yield for octane + Cl under high NOx condition (NO and NO2 injected) at RH = 35%. Investigate volatility behavior based on 2D thermograms.

Summary:
Ammonium sulfate seed (0.01M, 150 mL) was injected using an aerosol generation system. Cl2 gas, NO and NO2 gas were injected from their cylinders. 1 uL of octane was injected into a glass bulb and heated clean air was made to flow over it, carrying the volatilized octane into the chamber. After ~30 minutes (sufficient mixing time), lights were turned on for 1 hour (14:47:52-15:48:00). 16.8 ug/m^3 of SOA was formed, giving a mass yield of 0.24. This is Experiment #4 in associated publication.

Organization: Hildebrandt Ruiz Lab
Lab Affiliation: University of Texas at Austin, Austin, TX, USA
Chamber: LHR Chamber

Experiment Category: Gas phase chemical reaction, Volatility and partitioning, Aerosol formation
Oxidant: Chlorine radical
Reactants: octane, nitric oxide, nitrite
Reaction Type: Photooxidation
Relative Humidity: 35
Temperature: 25
Seed Name: Ammonium sulfate
